Report reveals GM George Paton’s job status with Broncos
General manager George Paton. Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos have not yet had a winning season since George Paton took over as their general manager, but the executive’s job reportedly is secure.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported in a column on Sunday that Paton’s job is safe. They say that Paton’s overall talent evaluation and relationship with Sean Payton should help him keep the job.

Paton’s trade for Russell Wilson and hire of Nathaniel Hackett as head coach in 2022 were disasters, but the team reportedly is encouraged by the way things started to come together after a shaky start in 2023. The Broncos bounced back from a 1-5 start this season to go 7-4 over their final 11 games and finish 8-9.

It also seems like the Broncos will part ways with Wilson this offseason and move forward with Paton and Payton.

The Broncos have gone 20-31 in Paton’s three seasons as general manager. Denver is still looking for its first winning season since 2016 and first playoff berth since 2015. They may feel like the Paton and Payton combination can get them there.
