Spanish newspaper Marca have attacked AC Milan for their handling of the negotiations with Julen Lopetegui and their decision to do a U-turn on hiring him.

Marca (via Radio Rossonera) have strongly criticised the choice of the Rossoneri management, stating that their actions are not those of a club that wants to live up to its proud history and instead one that ‘lives on its past’.

The newspaper underlines that ‘the summers in which Berlusconi collected cracks [top players] with his chequebook are over’, just as the league titles and Champions League trophies are far away.  The criticism is aimed at the decision to end the negotiations with Lopetegui ‘with the draft contract on the table’.

Marca add that ‘it is not typical of such a big club to give in to the blackmail of a handful of signatures [referring to the petition], as if now the fans were to say that a glorious team does not deserve a coach like Lopetegui or that Julen’s arrival could threaten their historical legacy’.

The report states that ‘Milan lives on its past’ and adds that ‘only Conte and Sarri have a better CV at club level than that of Lopetegui… for Milan the final choice will certainly end up being worse than Julen’.

According to the latest from Fabrizio Romano, Lopetegui has agreed terms with West Ham to become new head coach replacing David Moyes from next season.
